How to Strengthen Your Marriage and Grow Closer

The Marriage Minute is just the beginning.

A good tip can land at exactly the right moment. You read it with your coffee, it sticks in your head, and you think, "That one is us." We love that. It is why we write them.

But if we are being honest — and honest is kind of our thing — a minute a day will not carry a whole marriage.

You have been getting these daily tips for almost a month now, and we hope something has landed. Maybe one made you apologize quicker. Maybe one got you to put your phone down and actually listen. Those little sparks matter. They are just not the whole fire.

Here is what 26 years of marriage and eight kids have taught us: knowing the right thing and living the right thing are two different addresses, and there is a lot of road between them. We have had seasons where we could have told you exactly what a healthy marriage looks like — and still gone to bed feeling like two tired people running a household together. The tips were in our heads. The time to actually dig in together was not on the calendar.

Going deeper is where the change sticks. Deeper means longer than a minute. It means sitting down with the thing you keep skimming past in every short tip — the conversation about money, the distance you both feel but nobody names, the part of your marriage that only ever gets the leftovers of your energy. It means learning together, asking real questions, and letting somebody ask you the questions you would not ask yourselves.

That is why we built the Marriage Lab — live Q and A sessions, a video library, and a guided path for couples who are serious about growing together, with the first month free. Not because a daily email is not enough on purpose, but because we kept hearing the same thing from couples: "The tips help. We just need more than a tip." Every strong marriage we know, ours included, has seasons where somebody decided to keep making the small daily choices — and seasons where they stopped skimming and went all in.

Going deeper does not mean your marriage is in trouble. Some of the best reasons to dig in are good ones. You like each other and you want to protect that. You can feel a busy season pulling you into roommate mode and you want to catch it early instead of late. Or you simply want the next 20 years to be closer than the last 20. Depth is not an emergency move. It is what couples do who plan to finish this thing well, still holding hands.

And deeper does not have to mean heavier. Some of the deepest ground we have covered started with staying at the table a little longer. Asking a second question instead of settling for "I'm fine." Letting your spouse know, in a way they can actually feel, that they are secure with you. Small door, big room behind it — if you keep walking through it together.

Try This Today

Pick one tip from the last few weeks that stuck with you — the one you nodded at and then never did anything with. Tonight, give it more than a minute. Set aside twenty minutes, no phones, and talk it all the way through together: Where does this one show up in our marriage? What would it look like if we actually lived it this week? Then pick one tiny step you will both take before tomorrow night.

Twenty honest minutes on one real thing will do more for your marriage than a month of nodding at your inbox. We say that as the people writing the inbox.

A Conversation Starter

Ask your spouse: "If we went deeper in one part of our marriage this season — our friendship, our faith, how we talk, how we handle money — which one would you pick, and why?"

Then do not fix, defend, or rush past the answer. Just listen. You might be surprised which one they pick. We usually are.

The Marriage Minute is just the beginning. What you build on it, together and on purpose, is the marriage.
