How to Make Your Spouse Feel Secure in Marriage — couple on porch at sunset

It is simpler than you think.

Your spouse does not need a perfect speech. They do not need you to fix everything tonight. Underneath almost every argument we have ever had — the money ones, the tired ones, the stupid ones about who forgot what — there was really just one question hiding: Are we okay? Are you still in this with me?

Every person in a marriage needs to know one thing: "You are not going anywhere."

Not just that you will not leave. That you are committed to this relationship even when it is hard. That you will not threaten to leave in the middle of a fight. That your love is not conditional on them performing perfectly — getting every answer right, staying calm every time, never disappointing you.

Security is the foundation everything else is built on. Without it, every conflict feels like a potential ending. A sharp comment is not just a sharp comment anymore. A quiet evening is not just tiredness. Everything gets read through fear: Is this the start of us falling apart?

With it, you can actually work on things. You can disagree and still know you are safe. You can tell the truth without bracing for the whole marriage to be put on the table. That is why marriage can feel hard even when the love is real — hard seasons do not scare you the same way when neither person is wondering if the other one is halfway out the door.

We have learned this the real way, over 26 years of marriage and raising eight kids in a house that is rarely quiet. Early on, big feelings could turn a disagreement into big language — words that sounded final even when we did not mean them that way. You cannot build trust with one hand and throw around leaving with the other. So we made it plain: we can be mad, we can need a minute, we can come back and sort it out. But "I'm done" is not a tool we use to win an argument.

That does not mean staying silent or pretending. If something is wrong, do not let the important stuff go quiet. It means separating the problem from the promise. The problem can be real and still be dealt with inside a marriage that is not up for negotiation every time life gets hard. And when a rough stretch has left you distant, reconnecting when you feel like roommates starts a whole lot easier when both of you already know: we are still us, we are still staying.

Try This Today

Tell your spouse today — in whatever way feels real to you — that you are in this.

Say it out loud, plain and simple: "I want you to know, I'm not going anywhere. Even when it's hard, I'm here." Send it in a text if that is how your day works. Put a hand on their arm and say it while you are passing in the kitchen. Do not wait for a fight, an anniversary, or a perfect moment. Ordinary days are exactly when it lands deepest.

Then back it with one small thing. Come back after you have cooled off, like you said you would. Keep the threat words out of your next disagreement entirely. Security is not built by one grand declaration — it is built by hearing the promise and then watching it hold, day after normal day.

A Conversation Starter

Tonight, ask this: "When do you feel most secure with us — and is there anything I say or do in a fight that makes you worry I'm pulling away?"

Then just listen. Do not defend or explain it away. Let them tell you what actually helps them feel safe — it might be simpler than you think. And tell them your answer too. Most couples never say this part out loud, so both people end up guessing.

It is simpler than you think. Tell them you are not going anywhere — and then live like it.
