Top 5 Local Restaurants for Millsap's Students

Hi! My name is Alyssa Navarre! I am a rising senior at Millsap's College and I am going to share with you the college student’s version of Diners, Drive-ins, and Drives in the area around Millsap's Campus!

Keifer’s Downtown

Keifer’s was the first restaurant that I had visited when attending college. I went with the Women’s Basketball Team during Summer Orientation after a pick up game. I don’t know if it was just because I was really hungry, but it is still one of my favorite places around campus!

Their slogan is Jackson’s Favorite Greek Food and I definitely believe them! They have tons of gyros, hummus, and their famous feta dressing!! They also have burgers and curly fries too for less adventurous appetites. My go-to order is Pita w/ Mozz served with feta dressing and potato wedges as an appetizer, and a grilled chicken gyro. (I also fancy the steak and cheese gyro just as often)

Aside from the food they have a beautiful atmosphere with inside and outside dining and the service is always friendly and ready to assist!

Saltine

Saltine is where I went to eat for my birthday my sophomore year. It is a nice restaurant near the Fondren area that I absolutely fell in love with. Coming from Southwest Louisiana, it’s hard to find food that meets my standards in other areas of the country. But Saltine takes the cake! Everything I have ordered has been fantastic!

They serve a good amount of seafood, but they also cater to generic American food too. My favorite order usually starts at the oyster bar with Oysters Rockefeller. I continue my night with the Low Country Boil. And the night ends with my friends and I sharing either Sara’s Smore Cake or Cinnamon Cheesecake!

The restaurant itself is definitely beautiful. It’s decorations contain a nautic vibe that also displays a reasonable level of class that is still affordable on occasion for a college student’s budget!

Babalu

Babalu is another great spot to eat around campus. I have been there multiple times and have loved it every time. Birthday dinners, luncheons with friends, and just to grab a bite on a weekday!

My favorite order starts with the table sit guacamole (it’s a necessity) another option to start is the Tuna Ceviche. Both are fantastic appetizers, you can’t go wrong. My favorite entrees are the steak tips or ANY of the tacos. I haven’t had any of their desserts but that’s because it’s one of the few places I splurge on an appetizer!!

Seating is amazing as well. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant itself takes on a more modern appeal with bright lights and light interior. Overall, it’s amazing food, atmosphere, and service.

Pig & Pint

Pig & Pint is a great barbeque place in Fondren. The atmosphere consists of outdoor seating in covered and uncovered settings. It’s a great place to eat at twilight and feels like a cool summer night even in the middle of the school year.

My go-to order is either the pulled pork tacos or the pulled pork nachos. The serving sizes are plentiful. You place your order when you walk in and the staff brings your meal to your seat that you get to choose! It does stay pretty busy during the evenings, so if you’re interested make sure you get there early so that you have a place to park and sit!

They claim to have award winning BBQ and they do! The eatery has earned several awards for their establishment. Also for those readers who are of age they serve local craft beer, I haven’t tried it out myself but I have only heard good reviews!

This is your hometown BBQ one stop shop!

Brent’s Drug’s

Since 1946 Brent’s has been a place for dining, soda, and milkshakes. They also have a cocktail bar that they call The Apothecary at Brent’s Drugs. Fun Fact, my sorority held an event here the year before I arrived at Millsaps and all the older members claimed it was the best location for a semi formal event!

I was taken here for the first time as a first year and I loved it ever since. The establishment is set to appear like a diner from the 1950s complete with teal and red furnishings. It’s a step back in time. I love ordering a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake with fries. I could go here for just the milkshakes and be perfectly content with my order!
