The Purple Clothes Basket: The Turning Point of Our Marriage

Welcome back to the blog! This week on The Full Life Crew Marriage Podcast, Deb and I dive into a topic that is the absolute core of our lives together: How to Build a Successful Marriage.

When you're navigating life together, running a business, and managing the beautiful chaos of family, it is so easy to lose sight of the foundation. In this episode, we talk about the practical side of working together as a true team. We discuss our faith and how it serves as the ultimate anchor, uniting us on this crazy journey. We also dig into a concept that is vital to our relationship: the daily, intentional choice to out-give each other.

But the real heart of this episode comes down to a deeply personal story. It was a raw, ugly moment that completely shattered my pride and changed the way I look at my wife and our relationship forever.

The Purple Clothes Basket Story

Years ago, I came home after a long day to find Deb asleep. Instead of showing grace, I let resentment take the wheel. I was furious. I stormed through the house, furiously washing dishes, scrubbing floors, and gathering laundry. I wanted to make a point. I wanted to show her just how "easy" it was to keep the house perfectly clean, and I made sure to tell her exactly what I was doing, saying incredibly hurtful and unkind things in the process. I was on a self-righteous rampage. But then came the final load of laundry.

I walked into the living room holding a purple clothes basket. Deb was sitting on the couch, crying. In my anger, I dropped the basket. When the plastic hit the floor, it echoed through the room—it sounded like a bomb going off.

In that echoing silence, I heard a voice. It was clear, piercing, and it stopped me dead in my tracks. It said:

"How dare you. You asked this woman to share your life with you, not to be your slave. How dare you."

The weight of those words crushed me. I realized in a fraction of a second exactly what I was doing and who I was being. I was so overwhelmed with disgust at my own behavior that I literally ran out of the house.

A New Perspective

That purple clothes basket hitting the floor was the wake-up call I desperately needed. From that exact moment on, my entire perspective shifted. I stopped looking at our marriage as a scorecard of who was doing what, and started looking at it as a partnership where my job is to serve, love, and out-give the woman who agreed to share her life with me.

Building a successful marriage isn't about never making mistakes; it's about letting those moments of conviction change you for the better. We get completely vulnerable about this story and so much more in the new episode. If you’re ready for some real talk on faith, teamwork, and leaving your pride at the door, you won't want to miss this one.
