The Millsaps Campus is 100 beautiful acres. It creates a feeling of belonging when you
walk through campus. The sidewalks are lined with traditions and secret campus
superstitions.
Nothing beats walking through campus for a tour.
I could go in and give you an entire tour in word form, but it wouldn’t do the campus
justice. However, I will share some of my favorite stops!
Murrah Hall
My first favorite is Murrah Hall. Murrah is the
business center on campus. That building also
houses the Center for Careers. Millsaps does
a great job at making sure that all of their
students, if they want, be placed in a job that
they want. They will also provide free interview
assistance, resume building, meetings to
discuss graduate school applications, and
anything else that you might need to be prepared to enter into a career. I love Murrah
because of my tour during my senior year of high school. My tour day as a prospective
student was rainy and humid, yet I recall vividly deciding halfway through my tour route
that I was going to attend Millsaps. My dad and I were standing in front of Murrah Hall,
and I looked at him and told him I was going to go to school here and I was going to be
a tour guide. Today, I am finishing my last semester at the college and I am, in fact, a
tour guide.
M Bench
My second favorite stop is the M Bench. The M Bench is simply a bench that is shaped
like an M. But Millsaps has a lot of superstitions, and the M bench is probably my
favorite one. Supposedly, if you sit with your boyfriend or girlfriend at midnight during a
full moon and kiss, you are destined to be together forever. I know this sounds crazy,
but one of my friend's parents attended Millsaps, kissed on the M bench, graduated and
married each other and now both of their kids attend
Millsaps as well! I also enjoy asking visitors to guess the
name of the bench. Some of my favorite responses are the
W Bench, the Squiggle Bench, and the Secret Garden
Bench.
The Bowl
My third favorite stop is The Bowl. The Bowl is one of the
most active places on campus. The space is a large grassy
area that resembles a bowl and because the elevation dips.
The bowl is an event space, a study spot, and another
superstition. At the center of the bowl is the Millsaps Seal. As a first year, you participate
in what’s called 4th Night. 4th Night is the first and last time that you can step on the
seal in the bowl. The class walks across the seal together to signify the start of their
Millsaps experience on their fourth night on
campus. The next time you walk on the seal is at
graduation, which is also held in the bowl.
Legend says if you walk across the seal before
your graduation day that you won’t graduate and
the only way to break the curse is to streak
across the bowl... Good news, I haven’t heard of
anyone actually doing this, but Millsaps
students know better than to step on the seal.
Millsaps is beautiful and full of fun, if you end
up in Jackson, come check it out! Maybe I’ll
give you a campus tour!
GO MAJORS!
