When it comes to lawn mowers I normally buy the cheapest mower possible. I have one main reason for this. Teenagers. I have two teenagers that cut my grass. My oldest son Kohl 18 and my other son West 16. Although they are fantastic kids they just don’t take care of Dad’s stuff like they should.
Most parents in my position would agree that teenagers are just not the best at upkeep on equipment. They leave tools in the rain. The bed of a truck. Never put them away etc. If you have teenagers you understand my situation.
I personally buy the cheapest mower hoping to get 2 years of use out of it before they break it. I also always buy push mowers only. I do this because my boys are athletes and pushing the mower is a great workout.
I also buy the push mowers because I have a bad knee and I no longer can run or jog for exercise. However, pushing the push mower in the Louisiana heat can be a great way to sweat out the bud light.
I have always had tools and over the years after I discovered Craftsman and Dewalt were basically the same internally. I started to purchase only Craftsman tools. Any man with portable tools will tell you that once you pick a brand that is the brand you stick with good or bad. Mostly because the battery system.
Batteries can be the most expensive part of portable power tools. Over the years of acquiring more and more tools I also gathered an extensive battery collection.
I have always had gas powered trimmers and mowers. My experience with all of the V20 craftsman series tools from the impacts to the saws, I was very impressed. My experience with all the other V20 tools allowed me to make my first craftsman V20 yard tool. I purchased the Craftsman V20 Trimmer.
After using the Craftsman V20 Trimmer for only a month I was sold. It worked just as good as my gas trimmer but it was quieter, did not use gas or oil, and I did not have to spend hours trying to get it to run. Gas trimmers are notorious for being hard to start. Especially after sitting up for the winter.
The Craftsman V20 Trimmer was the gateway yard tool. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of electric mowers. I started looking for electric mowers and at the time none used the current batteries I already owned.
Then one day I visited a big box store and low and behold there sat in all its glory a Craftsman V20 Electric mower. As I gazed at this new mower I passed by the price. My joy soon faded to sadness.
I am cheap, I am frugal, I despise spending money. My $168 gas mower was still working just fine and my teenagers still could not destroy it. My dream of adding a battery operated mower would have to remain a dream.
I am not sure if it was physiological or accidental but one day I decided to mow the grass and give the boys a break. Not quite sure how it happened but the $168 2yr old mower came to its useful end.
I was saddened but joyful. I knew in my future was a Craftsman V20 Electric Lawn Mower. As I hate to spend money I am a practical person. It is far cheaper for me to buy my owner a mower and have my teenage boy mow than to hire a lawn service.
The unboxing of the mower was very uneventful. It required no warning to add oil before starting. Craftsman V20 Electric Mower required very little assembly.
Another deciding factor for me to acquire this mower over the other options on the market was my current tool collection. I have many Craftsman Tools. Just a V20 Craftsman battery can be expensive. With the Craftsman V20 Electric Mower I got 2 5amp our Craftsman V20 Batteries.
If I were to buy the batteries themselves it would cost over a 100 dollars. I not only acquired a Craftsman V20 Electric Mower I also received 2 huge batteries. These batteries I could use on all my other tools.
For example when hanging out with the family we have the Craftsman V20 Radio. With a 5 amp hour Craftsman V20 Battery the radio will play wide open for hours. We use it at baseball practice, backyard pool parties, when we are camping, and working out.
The Craftsman v20 Batteries are also great when using lights. We use them for all our lighting. They came in very handy during our 2 hurricanes in 2020 Laura and Delta. They also make an attachment that fits on craftsman v20 batteries so you can charge smaller devices. Such as cell phones, lights, computers, games, and much more.
I also currently trimmer and edged with my Craftsman V20 Electric Trimmer. So adding 2 craftsman v20 5 amp hour batteries to my trimming was a big win.
These are just a few reasons that helped me to justify the cost of the mower. Being that it is double what I would normally spend on a mower.
My next question was will it cut? After justifying to myself it was ok to get the Craftsman 2xV20 Electric Mower I was now unsure if it would cut.
I waited until we had several rains and let the grass grow for an extra few days. Our grass is thick. So I thought this would be a good test. Thick, tall Louisiana grass vs The Craftsman 2xV20 Electric Mower.
Let's Start with out of the box
Out of the box it is surprisingly simple. I have bought gas mowers before and had to spend 30 mins assembling them. The Craftsman 2x20V Electric mower was basically ready to go minus putting the handle together.
It did come with a bag for catching the grass clippings. The Craftsman Electric 2X V20 Mower has three options for clippings.
- Bagging
- Mulching
- Shoot
The Bag is super simple when it comes to putting it in and taking it off. Also adding the shoot is quick and simple.
I did not have to wait long to use it because I had my Craftsman V20 4 amp hour batteries plugged in and charged. While I started the test I put the Craftsman V20 5 amp batteries on the charger. I wanted to give them a full charge before I used them.
I started with the bag because in my mind I figured that would be the hardest test with the current condition of our yard. The Craftsman 2 x V20 Electric Mower has a sensor on it. When it senses an extra thick part while cutting it switches to a high mode automatically. And just like it sensed the thicker grass, when it sensed thinner grass it would switch back into low mode.
Our yard I would describe as larger than average. With our gas push mower it would take my 18 year old son about 2 hours to mow the entire yard. Maybe a little less if the grass was shorter.
Must have if you have Craftsman V20 batteries
With the Craftsman 2XV20 Electric Mower it is close to the same if not less. Kohls stated that due to the Craftsman being lighter than our older gas mowers he can move faster. One of the negatives is the faster you walk the poorer the cutting. To get the best cut with the Craftsman electric mower you need to not be in a rush.
I feel much more at ease when my boys are using this mower. Mostly because of the starting features. First you have to have the safety key all the way in. The next step is pushing the red start button then pulling the red safety handle. I also noticed that because it is electric the time it takes for the blade to stop compared to a gas mower is significantly less.
The starting procedure of the Craftsman 2 x V20 electric mower seems much safer. Eliminating the pull start to me puts my mind at ease that no one will pull the mower on top of them, while trying to start it.
When it comes to battery life in our yard the 2 Craftsman V20 5 amp hour batteries can last about 70% of the time we need to cut the yard. Then we use our older Craftsman V20 4 amp batteries to finish the Job.
If we did not have the second set of batteries we would have to wait about an hour or two for the Craftsman v20 5 amp hours to charge. When we use the 5 amp hour batteries we can get to almost 90% completion on one charge.
What I find amazing is the collection of batteries and chargers I have now. Due to adding Craftsman tools, such as; saws, drills, impacts, lights and more we have several batteries and chargers.
Once cool thing about the Craftsman V20 chargers is some have cooling fans built in. I have noticed that the chargers with the cooling fans get the battery temp down quicker for a faster charge.
Another nice feature that I did not even realize until I used it myself under my boat, was the low deck. On a typical gas mower the engine prevents you from reaching under certain objects. The Craftsman 2x V20 Electric Mower has an extremely low deck so I can get in all sorts of areas I would have to use a trimmer to reach.
