3 Must Attend Events for the Prospective College Student

Getting involved on campus during your undergrad experience is one of the best things you can do to have an enjoyable experience and meet so many new friends. Whether you want to learn new things about the college, network with organizations and individuals, or meet new people, on campus events are the one stop shop for information! Also, if you are a prospective student, a lot of colleges will keep track of how many events you attend, how much interaction you have with their emails and websites, and you might get a leg up on your competition if the school’s acceptance rate is tough.

1. Prospective Student Days

Millsaps Involvement fairs usually begin with a warm greeting right when you get out of your car, continue with multiple info sessions, student and professor panels, and conclude with a tour that ends at the fair. These events are usually titled things like, “Accepted Students Day,” “Scholars Day,” or simply just something with the words Event Day. I have seen accepted student days from a student perspective and behind the scenes. These events seem corny and irrelevant, but I promise there is information that you experience beyond what an email or website can convey.

1. Sporting Events

Sporting Events are another great way to check the school out. Maybe having a big football weekend is crucial to you, or maybe you don’t want to deal with all the extra parking and 3 mile walks to and from your car so you want a smaller setting. Or maybe you want to continue your skill at the next level and need to scope out what kind of team you could be a part of. Small schools like Millsaps usually allow new students to meet with coaches and players on game days. Speaking as an athlete from Millsaps, usually the tour you get from players is quite the inside scoop of the school.

1. Art Exhibits and Research Presentations

Even if you have no interest in attending something related to research or art, knowing what kind of students and types of research are at the university can be extremely helpful. At Millsaps you could be able to speak to students and professors that work on cancer research, studies on antibiotics, humanities research on populations, social experiments from the psychology department and so much more. One of my sorority sisters had the opportunity of presenting an honors thesis her last semester on studying the educational success of students that come from different types of economic backgrounds and another presented on cochlear processes from work in a graduate and professional lab. I also have another friend that I work with that regularly showcases her art on campus and sells her art for a pretty penny too. These are great opportunities to speak to students that have been where you are and have developed passion for their studies.
